Rudry Common

This was the first time I used my new full frame DSLR Nikon D750.

This was taken during the golden hours of sunset.  I lay on the floor to frame the shot, using my coat to cradle the camera and set the self timer.

My favourite part of the image is the pathway that is shaped like a pitch fork.  I have used the protruding rock as my foreground.  There is a clear divide of foreground, mid ground and background, which boast three different textures and colours.  The result gives a 2D effect.

Caerphilly Common

This is my contemporary version of Ansel Adams' Sentinel Dome Tree and the dreamy summer colours and style of Terri Weifenbach.

When I see the final result of this image, it is apparent that my research and inspiration are guiding and informing me how to shoot.  This style and my developing skill have produced an aesthetically pleasing image.

I love the shape of the cloud to the left which is almost an identical shape, pattern and size of the tree.

Caerphilly Mountain

I used the branches and positioned myself under them so they acted like a sun visor, which helped to reduce the bright, harsh sun glare.

I used a fence post to stabilise my camera, with self timer to avoid any camera shake.

I used a graduated filter in post editing to help bring out the definition in the clouds.

The contrasting hues with further internal contrasts within the blue of the sky and the green of the trees add to the aesthetic impression.

The tree just outside the foreground draws the attention of the viewer, appearing to have no branches or crown but which, on closer inspection, has both.

Caerphilly Mountain

This photograph was taken just before the golden hours.  I wanted the brighter sunlight to weave through the trees. It had been raining earlier in the day, so the trees were wet.  When the sunlight landed on the trunks it created a rich gloss finish.

I positioned myself sat on the ground and balanced the camera on a fallen tree trunk in front of me, thus allowing me to compose the shot using a slow shutter speed.  The result captured the detail of the high contrast gloss finish.  The area was shaded due to the dense tree population so I used a higher ISO.

This image was inspired by Shinzo Maeda, his use of trees, rich colours and magical feel of his imagery.   I hope to have re created this in my image.
